It’s all about getting a balance:

We get asked a lot of questions about salaries, packages and levels to go into organisations. It is essential that you find a balance as you do not want to under sell yourself but also you do not want to pitch your expectations too high.

Do as much research as you can via the web and other media to see what roles are paying and what experiences and skills are required. If you under sell yourself at this stage it will be hard to then catch up later.

If you are using agencies they should be able to advise you on salaries but beware, if you under value yourself they may try and place you quickly to get their fee – so do your own research and get advice from some unbiased sources.

However, there is also a very real danger that if you pitch too high it could close a lot of doors and also if you are lucky enough to make a huge jump in salary for your first role, you need to ask yourself can I perform in this role from day one! You need to find a role where you can excel, show what you can do and progress whilst also getting paid a fair salary/package.
